Who is this article for?

No elevated permissions are required.
This article explains how to create and configure a search-based location item using KQL to surface SharePoint content.
1. Search location item
The search location item allows you to define a query using keyword query language (KQL) to return one or more locations from across your SharePoint environment. These may include site collections, sites, libraries, lists, folders, and document sets.
The accuracy and depth of search results depend on your SharePoint platform and search configuration.
2. Create a location search
- Select New Item.
- Choose Search from the location options.
- Specify a name for the search item.
3. Use result source (optional)
If a result source has been created in SharePoint, it can be surfaced and delivered to users within their applications.
4. Customize search results format
Define a custom format for displaying search result titles based on location type.
4.1. Supported tokens
- Site collections: [Site], [URL]
- Sites: [URLPartSiteCollection], [Site], [URL]
- Lists & libraries: [URLPartSiteCollection], [Site], [List], [URL]
- Folders & document sets: [URLPartSiteCollection], [Site], [Folder], [URL]
5. Capture settings
Determine how saving to a returned search item behaves within the profile. These settings are currently available only in desktop environments.
6. Notes
When searching for site collections, sites, or libraries, you can use existing managed properties such as Title, UrlDepth, and Path. You may also create and crawl custom property bag columns to use as managed properties in search queries.
