Configuring the navigation tree
Who is this article for?
Administrators who want to learn to configure the navigation tree.
No elevated permissions are required.
The navigation tree is used consistently throughout the desktop suite, enabling users to efficiently access and save content to SharePoint and Microsoft 365 locations.
1. SharePoint search service
Farm-wide search capability: A site collection URL can be entered to instruct the navigation tree to search a specific SharePoint farm. If no site collection is defined, the search service of the first site collection listed will be used.
2. Location search
The farm-wide search within the navigation tree can be disabled if needed.
2.1. Search query modes
- Keyword query language search: Accepts the same syntax as standard SharePoint search. Searches across all indexed properties and supports advanced refinements such as managed property matching.
- Title property search: Matches entered text against only the title or name of locations (e.g. site collection, site, library, folder, document set).
For more information on SharePoint keyword query language, refer to this Microsoft article.
3. Location filtering
The navigation tree automatically trims locations based on user credentials when browsing SharePoint.
This may include system libraries or lists such as site asset libraries. These can be hidden from the navigation tree by selecting the appropriate checkbox.
The live service provides advanced filtering options, including:
- Restricting items to the quick launch
- Filtering by template ID
- Specifying which locations are available in the navigation tree
3.1. Type-ahead filtering
Content can be filtered using “starts with…” or “contains…” logic. A complete explanation and examples are available in the online knowledge base.
4. Smart filing
4.1. Suggested locations
Suggested locations intelligently analyse the email being saved to SharePoint and present relevant locations for saving.
This feature works without configuration. For advanced customization, a license to the live service is required.
By default, three suggested locations are shown. This can be extended to display up to six locations.
