This article explains how to rename and replace files when saving to SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, or OneDrive using Mail and Docs Explorer.
1. Rename files during save
When saving a document to SharePoint, you can rename the file as part of the save process.
- Select Rename Files in the Save to SharePoint window.
- Enter the new file name before completing the save.
2. Rename existing documents
Renaming is supported for files already saved to SharePoint Online/Office 365, SharePoint 2019, and SharePoint 2016.
You can rename documents directly within Mail or Docs Explorer, even after they’ve been saved to SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, or OneDrive.
3. Overwrite existing files
Files in a SharePoint location will not be overwritten unless the Override Existing Files option is selected in the Save to SharePoint window.
3.1. Without versioning enabled
If versioning is not enabled on the document library, the new file will replace the existing file with the same name.
3.2. With versioning enabled
If versioning is enabled and Override Existing Files is selected, the new file will be saved as a new version of the existing document.
3.3. Require documents to be checked out
If the document library requires files to be checked out before editing, you will not be able to overwrite the file unless it is checked out to you. If the file is checked out by someone else, overwrite will also be blocked.
